- My expectations for
Mother's Day was going to be one of the best. I have four sons
and sure enough roses arrived early. But Satan had other plans.
Next was a phone call that one family was down with COVID, which
meant that plans for a get together had to be postponed. To make
me feel better I listened to a preacher. His sermon:
-
- "Are You REALLY
Filled with the Holy Spirit?"
-
- When he stated that
you are not saved if you don't speak in tongues, my special Mother's
Day was destroyed. I reached out to several people I knew who
understands the Gospel and decided to share what they wrote to
pick up the pieces and reassured me that I was still on the way
to the straight gate.
-
- The following Scripture
is the most important as a born again believer. Matthew 7:13-15
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the
gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and
many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate,
and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few
there be that find it. Beware of false prophets, which come
to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."
-
- My friend wrote: "I
get so excited to talk about the Bible, and especially the Holy
Spirit and things of God. I included here in relation to tongues
and a few points, I thought were important to note. I pulled
different scriptures and a definition.
-
- 1. According to scripture tongues
are one of the spiritual gifts listed. 1 Corinthians
12:4-11 "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the
same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but
the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations,
but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the
manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
-
- "For to one
is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another
the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith
by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by
the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to
another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits;
to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation
of tongues: But all these worketh that one and
the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he
will."
-
- 2. Than in the closing chapter
of Mark, Jesus' last words regarding the great commission;
(Mark addressed the twelve disciples in Mark 16:15-18)
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and
preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and
is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall
be damned. And these signs shall follow them that
believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall
speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and
if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they
shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
-
- From a Christian's point
of view some thoughts here are perhaps, the Spirit uses a believer
in these signs even if it's not their primary manifestation gift(s)
or in reference to the great commission these signs represent
a body of believers doing the work, while manifesting the
signs as a group. It does indicate in this text 'new' tongues.
3. I'd also point out that preachers try to say tongues
are different foreign languages, like Chinese, Polish, Indian
and so on, known languages that are given to a believer (like
in Acts 2:1-6 at Pentecost it was known languages,
called tongues). Even though the same Strong's word is used
for those language tongues verses a heavenly tongue. There is
a distinction in Strong's G1100 with it stating 'unknown'
tongues for that in the gift of tongues. As in (1 Corinthians
14:2 - For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men
but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit
he speaks mysteries). So it's clear that no one can understands
it except God, it's not a foreign ethnic language in this
text. it's spiritual tongues to God and it's a mystery.
-
- 4. I know for myself when I was
a new believer, I read we should desire spiritual gifts (1
Cor 14:1) also in verse 4, Paul says that he who speaks
in tongues edifies himself as opposed to all the other spiritual
gifts, they help others, where tongues 'edifies' himself.
I looked up the word edifies in the Greek. See below. It's interesting.
- ( oikodomeo Strongs
G3618 with Thayer Greek lexicon and it means: to build up or
erect a house or building, properly, as like a foundation,
or build upon a foundation laid by others, to carry on
instruction of others, to restore by building, to repair and
rebuild. to promote growth in Christian wisdom, affection,
grace, virtue, holiness, blessedness,: absolutely).
I would say tongues are important to a believer, because it builds
us up in the Lord. Where it distinguishes that the gift of prophesy
builds up the church.
As a personal testimony. I began to pray when I was a new believer
that if the Lord wanted to give me these gifts, I am willing
to receive them. I didn't speak in tongues, but believed I had
other gifts While I was away on a short term mission trip about
4-years after getting saved. We were in a church, in Central
America and the city we were visiting they had revival going
on for a few years. All the bars and liquor stores closed down
in the city, everyone was getting saved.
-
- Even the farmer's crops
were producing supper sized vegetables, that happened during
the revival. (Carrots were the size of a child's leg and onions
almost the size of a basket ball).
- It was an amazing blessing
of God during their revival. At that little humble church, while
I was worshiping the Lord, I suddenly felt from my belly a stirring
and my mouth began to utter a stream of some sort of word like
sounds and syllables and they were coming out in a flow that
was quicker than I could humanly speak and it just kept going
on and on. It was so amazing and I felt such a joy, an unspeakable
joy so deep inside and it just kept flowing. I just couldn't
believe it and I knew in my heart what the Holy Spirit did that
night. He gave me the gift of tongues and I am glad to still
have it today.
- Some additional scriptures:
* Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. And
God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second
prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of
healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Do all
have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all
workers of miracles? But earnestly desire the best gifts. And
yet I show you a more excellent way." (1Cor.12:27-31)
-
- * Though I speak with
the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become
sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. " (1Cor:13.1)
-
- So that about sums it
up on my end, I hope this helps. While there are scriptures that
would indicate with a question, do all speak in tongues? Or God
gives as He wills. I know I didn't have the gift until 4-years
after being saved, while I had other gifts. Then in Mark's chapter
it says these signs will follow a believer. It's also important
to mention that tongues edifies oneself and not the church. So
in answer to your research, I hope these scriptures help.
-
- I know some people who
received this gift when they got saved, but than heard a teaching
against tongues, so they suppressed it. My mom was one that happened
to and I know of someone else too. I pray the church would be
set free and be able to use all the gifts God has given each
believer. God's glory will be manifested, a living and powerful
all knowing God, in action through His children!! V.P.

- Here is what another

wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction,
